Our Belletrista Bag is On the Move!

photo of St. Pierre

Did you guess where our Belle bag is?

Charlotte Brontë stayed in the vicarage of St. Michael's church in Hathersage, high in England's Peak District, for three weeks in 1845, and it is before the old vicarage that our Belle bag sits. Brontë was working on an idea that would eventually become her masterpiece. The church and the surrounding countryside provided the inspiration for her work. Hathersage eventually become the village of Morton, and the gravestones of the local gentry would provide her with a surname for her heroine: Jane Eyre.

Thumbnails, left to right:

1. St. Michael's church, Hathersage.

2. A view across the peaks from the churchyard.

3. Gravestones of the Eyre family. The right hand tablet commemorates William Eyre, buried in 1834. Brontë would have seen this stone on her walks around the church.
